Yes, there is a platform that combines video chat technology with fun games. Let’s Roam’s Virtual Game Night is that platform. In five rounds of gameplay, you’ll encounter a range of games like charades, Let’s Draw (virtual Pictionary), trivia, and personalized questions (about you and your friends). You don’t have to log on to a zoom call and then share your screen to play a game- it’s all blended together to maximize your fun! Their customization options let you tailor your game so you can do all trivia, all charades, all drinking games, whatever your group is in the mood for.
Bingo
Despite its reputation as a game that’s just for people over 60, Bingo has gained a huge following in the virtual world. It’’s a crowd-pleaser, and fun for people of all ages. The online version is almost just as fun as playing in a big bingo hall, and it allows you to play with loved ones across the globe. Here’s how to play a game of virtual bingo: first get everyone on a Zoom call (or whatever video call platform you prefer), then have everyone download their individual bingo cards (no printing required!), next, play! Use the handy-dandy Let’s Play Bingo site, and share your screen as you pick and call the numbers. Want to raise the stakes? Offer prizes for the winners!
House Party
If you and your friends prefer to play games and chat on your phones, then we recommend checking out the House Party app. It allows you to play fun games while video chatting. The game options include: Heads Up, Trivia, Pictionary, and Chips and Guac (which is similar to cards against humanity).
Trivia
Everyone loves flexing their brain muscles and showing off their impressive knowledge. Next time your friends want to get together, play online trivia and go brain-to-brain with your friends. Find an online trivia site that’s right for you (there are a lot out there), and see which one of you can get the most questions right. Let’s Roam’s Virtual Game Night has a trivia-only option with categories like American history, TV sitcoms, rom-com movies, world sports, 90’s music, and more.
Codenames
If you’ve played the board game Codenames, you know how fun it can be, and you’re probably thrilled to learn that they’ve made an online version so you can play virtually. If you’re unfamiliar with Codenames, it gives you and your friends the chance to play spy and test your mental connection. “Codenames is a game of guessing which codenames (i.e., words) in a set are related to a hint-word given by another player. Players split into two teams: red and blue. One player of each team is selected as the team’s spymaster; the others are field operatives” (Wikipedia). To play the online version with friends, you start with a zoom/video call then click into the virtual Codenames platform. Everyone logs in using the same unique code. Let the spy games begin!
Virtual Drinking Games With Friends
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes
Ever wonder what it’s like to be James Bond, or in the bomb squad, dismantling bombs with milliseconds to spare? The game Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes makes your action movie dreams come true. It’s is a cooperative bomb-defusing party game that draws inspiration from Escape Rooms. All of the players are in the same virtual room where there is also a (digital) bomb. The game gives each member instructions on how to diffuse the bomb, so it’s up to everyone to work together to communicate effectively. If you succeed, you’ll all get out of the virtual room alive without the bomb going off. If you don’t, BOOM. Play over video chat for some extra connection.
UNO
It’s true- the much-loved card game has gone digital! You can play UNO on the UNO app and challenge your friends to play with you. Have a video call while you’re playing to amp up the competition…and so you can scream “UNO!” at each other.
Never Have I Ever
Good Virtual Games With Friends
You can take this classic party game online to turn it into a virtual game to play with friends. This is usually a drinking game, but you can easily make it family-friendly by changing the rules slightly. Here’s how it works: at your next virtual party, go around the virtual room/video call and have everyone share something they’ve never done. If anyone on the call has done that thing, they have to drink. An alternative to drinking? Stuff a huge marshmallow in your mouth (kids will love this). You get to learn a lot about people this way.
GeoGuessr
As an adventure and exploration company, this one’s a favorite in the Let’s Roam office. GeoGuessr is a “web-based geographic discovery game”. It places you (virtually) in different places around the world using randomized Google street views. Your job is to click around and explore the area until you find signs and indicators of where in the world you are. Guess your exact location before time runs out. The closer you are, the more points you get. Play it over video chat with your friends to make it a fun collaborative experience.
Use this list as a reference this weekend, next weekend, next Tuesday, whenever you’re ready to have an amazing game night. You’ll never run out of fun virtual games to play with friends, no matter how long you’re quarantining.
